The Madara horseman is a rock relief carved 23 meters up in the cliffs of the Madara plateau. It is situated only a kilometer and a half away from the village of Madara and 20 km away from the town of Shoumen.
A full-size horseman can be seen in the rocks. An eagle and a dog accompany the man, while a speared lion has been carved in front of him. Each of the images is full of symbolism. The entire work presents a Bulgarian ruler, triumphant over his enemies.
UNESCO included the Madara horseman in its World Heritage List.
During the summer, the horseman can be observed from 8 am to 7 pm and in the winter – from 8 am to 5 pm.
