Architecture-museum preserve Tsarevets is located on a hill carrying the same name. The hill hosts the remains of a citadel. It housed the tsar’s palace and the bishop’s residence.
Trapezitsa hill is the second fortress that formed the internal part of the ancient capital. The hill is situated on the right shore of Yantra, northwest of Tsarevets.
In the foot of the two hills, you can see Asenova district. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, this town part hosted the so called new residential district. Explore the remains of a fortress wall that can be seen there today. The district also houses the churches St. Dimitur Solounski, St. Forty Martyrs, St. George and St. Peter and Pavel. All these churches have been named monuments of culture.
St. Dimitur Solounski church has witnessed major events. It is the place where the two brother boyars Assen and Petur start calling for rebellion against Byzantine rule. In the coming decades, the church acted as a royal sanctuary.
One of the most important historic monuments in Veliko Turnovo is called St. Forty Martyrs church. Tsar Ivan Assen II constructed the church, after his soldiers won the battle of Klokotnitsa in 1230. It safeguards three important columns, Omourtagova, Assenova and Granichna. The writings on these columns tell of Bulgaria’s past.
Gourko street is one of the most beautiful and colorful in the country. Revival-time houses line the street and all of them face Yantra River.
Samodivska Charshia was the place where during the Bulgarian revival, many craftsmen exercised their crafts. Today, the place has turned into a museum and some of the workshops have been renovated. Visitors can watch craftsmen while they work in the authentic surroundings.
The house with the monkey was constructed in the mid-19th century. Koliu Fitcheto, a local wealthy merchant started the construction. The house has impressive architecture, resulting from the specifics of the area on which it was constructed. The house is located between the old covered market and Samodivska Charshia.
Veliko Turnovo has several museums. Some interesting artifacts can be seen in the revival museum, archaeology museum and the new Bulgarian history museum.
