The Sliven history museum is one of the oldest institutions in the town. It was set up in 1913 as a community house museum. Today, it has a beautiful building on Sliven’s central street. The address is 18 Tsar Osvoboditel boulevard.
Sliven history museum features a renewed expo named Treasures, Museum, Memory. It was opened on May 12 2008 to mark 130 years since museum establishment in Bulgaria and 95 years since the opening of the Sliven museum.
Some of the exhibited artifacts are of international importance. These present life in the region from the Neolithic period to present time.
Halls on the first floor present marble and bronze sculptures from Roman times, as well as jewelry from the antiquity and the Middle Ages. One of the most important exhibition items is the writing on a stone piece honoring Zeus. Visitors also show interest in small objects like statuettes and medical instruments.
The tools collection features instruments that craftsmen used and agriculture tools. It also features bronze dishes, ceramics and weapons found in the region of Sliven and dating back to the Bronze Age and Middle Ages.
Jewelry and copper dishes have been displayed on the second floor. A unique collection of revival period weapons can be seen there, as well.
The third floor features findings from the Valley of Thracian Kings that were discovered in 2007.
The collection includes luxurious ceramic dishes, funeral presents, decorations and amphorae. Two silver rhytons are said to have the highest artistic value. A golden mask, seals and a unique rhyton made of silver have been placed among the artifacts.
Visitors are welcome each day from 9 am to midday and from 2 pm to 5 pm each day during the summer and on week days during the winter.
