National Museum of History (NMH) is supposedly the one in the country that brags the richest collection. It was created in 1973. Until 2000, the collections were placed in Sofia’s court of justice and were then moved to Boyana.
Today, the museum’s exhibition items exceed 650 000. The numerous collections trace Bulgarian history from ancient times. Original items and replicas of many treasures can be seen there. Some of the notable items include the Panagyurishte treasure, as well as the treasures from Rogozen, Letnitsa and Douvanlii. A replica of the gold Malaia Pereshchepina treasure can also be examined.
Documents photos and authentic objects depict Bulgarian history. The modern history section includes clothing and belongings of the Bulgarian royal family.
Stone columns, monuments and other artifacts from the Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods have been placed in the museum’s yard.
You will need hours to examine the entire collection. Make sure you have at least half a day available.
The museum is situated in Boyana district, on 2 Vitoshko Lale street. It works each day from 9 am to 5.30 pm during the winter and from 9.30 am to 6 pm during the summer. The entrance fee is 10 leva and discounts are available for school and university students. A special permission and additional fee have to be taken care of, if you plan to take photos inside the museum.
