Parangalitsa is a preserve in the southwestern part of Rila Mountain. It got its status in 1933, which makes Parangalitsa one of the oldest preserves in the country. The name comes from Greek and means forbidden place.
The preserve protects spruce forests situated at altitudes from 1750 to 2000 m. Deciduous forests grow on the lower parts of the preserve. More than 300 types of plants, 75 of which endangered, grow there.
Bears, wild cats and deer live in Parngalitsa’s forests. The Rila Mountain lakes are rich in trout.
