Smilyan is the biggest village in the Rhodope region, having 1600 residents. According to historians, Smilyan is one of the oldest settlements in the Rhodope region. Its old name used to be Smolen.
During the Ottoman reign, locals were forced to accept Islam. The village’s mosque was constructed over the ruins of the church St. Petur and Pavel. Despite the events, representatives of various religious groups peacefully coexist there today.

The village is situated on the bank of Arda River, turning it into a heaven for fishermen. Trout, grey mullet and barbel can be caught there. Many fishermen travel to the village during the summer, since the village is listed as one of the most attractive fishing destinations in the country.
Landmarks abound in the region. Ouhlovitsa cave is situated five km away from the village and is well known for its formations.
Agoushevi konatsi, an old complex preserved from Ottoman times, is situated in the village of Mogilitsa, near Smilyan. A Thracian mound on the peak of Kom and several other caves are also worth paying a visit.
An ostrich farm is situated near the village and open for visitors.
Many Smilyan houses offer accommodation. A slightly higher sum will get you a hotel room, yet prices there are also moderate. If you are lucky, hosts will offer you breakfast of your own choice.
