Bulgarian tsar Simeon the Great gave the name of the town of Shoumen. According to historic evidence, the town carried the name Shimeonis, or the town of Simeon, in the past.
Shoumen is located in northeastern Bulgaria, nearly 100 km away from Varna.
The town is ancient and witnessed many key historic developments.
One of the most important fortresses in Bulgaria is situated in Shoumen. During the First Bulgarian Kingdom, the fortress protected the old Bulgarian capitals of Pliska and Preslav.
During the revival period, the town grew. A number of cultural institutions appeared for the first time in Shoumen. The first Bulgarian theater play was presented there. Shoumen also hosted the first girl’s school. Many revolutionaries and public figures acted there.
Shoumen’s landmarks include the town’s history museum that has a rich collection of items from various time periods. A number of house-museums among which the ones of Panaiot Volov, Laiosh Koshout, Dobri Voinikov and Pancho Vladigerov are located there.
The Shoumen plateau hosts one of the most impressive monuments in the country. It is dedicated to 1300 years since the creation of Bulgaria. The monument features images of the most crucial moments in Bulgarian history. To reach the work of art, you have to climb 1300 stairs. The remains of the Shoumen fortress can also be seen there.
One of the few Bulgarian monuments placed under UNESCO protection is located near Shoumen. The Madara Horseman is a unique stone relief, whose author is unknown. Unfortunately, weather phenomena slowly erase the image.
The old Bulgarian capitals of Pliska and Preslav can also be seen near. If you decide to explore Shoumen, try to reach them as well. A number of monuments and historic sites have been preserved there.
