The town of Aitos is situated on the banks of Aitoska River. Aitos is situated 30 km away from Bourgas and 358 km away from Sofia. Nearly 25 000 people live in Aitos and 35 547 live in the town and the 17 other settlements in the municipality.
Winter in Aitos is mild and the summer is hot. The northern parts of the municipality are situated on the southern slopes of Aitos Mountain.
Ancient remains uncovered in the region signify that the town was a Thracian settlement in the distant past.
The remains of three towers are situated northwest of Aitos. These are probably the remains of a medieval fortification.
In 1206, Aitos was completely destroyed by Crusaders but saw revival in 1488.
Throughout time, the town received several names. Aetos, Astos and Idos are some of them, together with Orlovets and Orlovo. After the liberation, Aitos turned into an agriculture center that was more important than the city of Bourgas.
Aitos was known for its excellent honey. One of a kind apiculture fair took place there on Palm Sunday. Honey production was offered for sale on Easter.
The town is also famous for its pottery production. The craft was developed there as far back as the 5th and 6th centuries.
Today, Aitos is still an agriculture center. The town produces some of the best rakia and wine in the country.
Several landmarks welcome tourists. Genger ethnographic complex is situated in Slaveeva Reka park. The crafts alley will take you back in time and will show you what the region looked like many years ago.
One of the places that you must pay attention to isSt. Dimitur church. It was constructed in 1844 and features some unique paintings.
Petur Stanev memorial house is also an art gallery that features the works of well-known local painters.
One of the town’s symbols is situated one km away from Aitos. The rock formation resembles three human figures and has been named Trite Bratia (the three brothers). According to legends, the three brothers protected the town from conquest. The rock phenomenon was named a nature landmark in 1972.
Aitos municipality benefits from several mineral springs. Water temperature is 41 degrees Celsius and the springs are known for their healing power. The villages of Shivarovo, Cheresha, Iabulchevo and Suedinenie have their mineral springs, as well.
Some interesting animals inhabit the forests in Stara Planina Mountain near Aitos. The forests feature boars, wolves, deer and hares among many others.
Several hotels, villas and houses offer accommodation in Aitos and the mountain area nearby. The resort area of Biala Reka is situated 16 km away from Aitos.
