If you really need to escape city noise and heat, just visit this place and you will be able to spend there days or even weeks of peaceful relaxation.
Alexander Stamboliyski dam is the first major dam to be constructed in Bulgaria. It was planned back in the 40s of the past century and construction took place in 1953. The dam was constructed over plots in the municipalities of Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo. It starts three km west of the town of Sevlievo.
The length of the dam is 18 km and depending on the water level its depth varies from 30 to 35 m. An entire village had to disappear in order for dam construction to take place. Residents of the village of Bara were relocated to other villages of the region. Even today, when the water level is low, you can see the remains of buildings and the bell tower of the village church.
Fishermen love this place. The population of fish is quite big and diverse. The dam is suitable for catching carp and perch. Sheat-fish also swim there.
The area surrounding the dam is unusually beautiful and features forests, lush meadows and cliffs. Reaching the dam itself is easy even by car. Have in mind that the positioning of tents in the area is free of charge. Fish catching is also fee-free.
Some of the water sports you can practice there include surfing, water skiing or taking a boat ride.
Small villas have been constructed in the region, near the village of Mladen. There, you can find accommodation but have in mind that food is unavailable. The bungalows are quite comfortable and will give you the chance to enjoy the beauty of the area for a longer period of time.
Alexander Stamboliyski dam is situated 50 km away from Veliko Turnovo, 18 km away from Pavlikeni and three km away from Sevlievo.
