The Rhodopes are one of the places in Bulgaria where rare bird species can be seen. More than 290 types inhabit the region. Of them, 97 nest there permanently, 32 types spend the winter there and 47 species rest in the region during their migration. Some endangered species can be seen in the Rhodopes.
Many types can be observed in the eastern part of the Rhodopes. Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) has created a shelter that visitors can use to observe without disturbing birds.
Trigrad gorge in the western part of the mountain is the place where an extremely rare type of birds can be seen. The bird is very small and resembles a hummingbird. It nests in the rocks and since the bird is monogamous, the number has significantly decreased.
Buzzards, eagles and owls can also be seen in the Rhodope region.
Observing birds in the Rhodopes can take you to some unusually beautiful places. You can combine birdwatching with rural and eco tourism. Many spots offer good fishing conditions and the mineral springs have turned some of the settlements into spa resorts.
