One of the most beautiful creations of nature in Bulgaria is situated in the Rhodope region. Choudnite Mostove rock phenomenon was previously known as Erkiupia, which means rock bridge in Turkish.
The landmark is situated 70 km away from Plovdiv and as many kilometers away from Smolyan.
In 1961, Choudnite Mostove was named a nature landmark. Since ancient times, the natural bridges were used as a pedestrian path connecting the villages of Orehovo and Zaburdo.
A legend describes the creation of the bridges. Many years ago, a dragon started attacking the herds of Zaburdo shepherds. Finally, they gathered together to find a way to deal with the problem. A donkey was loaded with tinder and set free.
The dragon swallowed the donkey and the tinder started burning inside it. The furious dragon found a small hole and hid there. Years ago, after its body decayed, the bridges were formed.
Actually, the rock phenomenon is the creation of Dulbok Dol River. For centuries, it passed through the region and carved a tunnel. Its ceiling suddenly collapsed and the remaining parts formed the natural bridges.
The biggest bridge is 70 m high. About 100 m away, down the flow of the river, you will notice the second bridge that is 23 m high. If you decide to cross over it, be careful. The bridge ends in an abyss.
About a kilometer and a half away you will notice the third bridge, which is still unexplored.
It is best to visit Choudnite Mostove during the summer. Yet, if you decide to enjoy the Rhodope beauty in the winter you can easily reach the phenomenon since the path leading to it is accessible year-round.
Huts situated nearby offer excellent vacation opportunities.
