Danube River originates in Germany’s Black Forest and is the second longest river in Europe. Its length is 2859 km and Danube is the only river flowing from the west to the east.
The river is a major international water route that crosses nine European countries. One of these countries is Bulgaria. Nearly 5.2 percent of the river’s length is situated in the country. These nearly 480 km give excellent opportunities for tourism practices like cruises.
These types of trips have grown in popularity over the past few years. The number of passengers is constantly increasing.
Over 11 companies perform Danube cruises and five or six of these include Bulgaria as a destination to visit. One Bulgarian company has specialized in such trips.
Unfortunately, the Bulgarian part of the river lacks major landmarks and beautiful nature like the one in Hungary, Austria and Germany. The riverbank in these countries is known for the numerous castles and nature landmarks. Yet, Bulgarian towns situated on the bank of the river compensate for the lack. Towns like Vidin, Svishtov, Silistra and Rousse are worth paying a visit.
Each company includes walks in these towns as part of its program. Walks last six to seven hours. Once done exploring, tourists head to the next town.
The longest stay takes place in Rousse. The town brags numerous landmarks that enchant visitors. It has long been known as a town of museums. On of its biggest valuables is the collection of the local history museum that includes over 120 000 exhibition items.
According to a legend, Johan Strauss composed The Blue Danube inspired by the beauty of the Bulgarian riverbank. This theory remains unconfirmed but once again proves that coastal cities in Bulgaria have something to offer to visitors.
Cruises show the riverbank to visitors only once. In Romania, tourists take an airplane back to Germany.
Over the past few years, the Bulgarian part of the Danube attracts increasing number of visitors. The unique combination of major cultural landmarks, peacefulness and relaxing atmosphere makes each cruise unforgettable.
