Divotino Monastery Holy Trinity (Sveta Troitsa) is situated two km southwest of the Bankia’s Mihailovo district. It was founded in the 11th century.
According to a legend, a man and a woman founded the monastery after they discovered a treasure buried in their yard. Until present, the place where the treasure was found carries the name Imaneto (the treasure in Bulgarian).
Assaults in 1806 led to the destruction of the monastery. According to a legend, the leader of a gang attacking the region was thunderstruck in the vicinities of the monastery.
Divotino Monastery has also been called ‘the royal monastery’ since Bulgarian ruler Ferdinand often visited it during his reign.
Only the wooden iconostasis and three icons have been preserved from the original monastery. A miracle-making icon can also be seen. The church and the monastery premises were reconstructed in 1902.
The monastery’s yard is quite small but makes visitors feel comfortable.
Divotino Monastery is still functioning today. It has been named a monument of culture.
You will find no food or accommodation opportunities in the sanctuary. Yet, the proximity of the monastery to Bankia turns it into a popular tourism destination.
The lack of information boards will probably obstruct your attempts to find the monastery. Follow the road leading to Mihailovo and shortly before you reach the district change to an asphalt road starting there. You need to drive for a kilometer and you will see a short, unpaved road. It would be best to ask locals for directions.
