Dobrovanski Gubi (Dobrovan mushrooms) rock phenomenon is situated in the eastern part of Stara Planina Mountain, about 10 km away from the village of Sini Rid.
The name of this unusual rock formation is derived from the name of Dobrovan village. Unfortunately, the settlement no longer exists.
The three rock formations are mushroom-shaped and positioned in a line, approximately 10 meters away from each other.
Out of the three formations, one stands out as the tallest and most beautifully shaped. The ‘mushroom’ is nearly four meters high. Its diameter is four meters, as well.
The other two formations are smaller and less symmetrical, yet they possess specific charm that makes them unique.
Dobrovanski Gubi rock phenomenon formed as a result of earth layer motion and difference in the strength of the sandy and limestone layers. Weather conditions shaped the rocks even more to turn them into the mushrooms that we see today.
The rock phenomenon was named a nature landmark in 1973.
Compared to other rock formations in Bulgaria, Dobrovanski Gubi is little known. Most people head to the stone mushrooms near Kurdzhali or the Stone Wedding rock phenomenon. Yet, paying attention to the formation near Sini Rid is worth it.
To reach Dobrovanski Gubi, you have to pass through Sini Rid and to continue following the narrow road. You will reach a forest clearing. Turn left and you will see the only house that remained from the village of Dobrovan. The road will soon become a narrow path that will take you directly to Dobrovanski Gubi.
