The village of Dolen hides in the western part of the Rhodope Mountains, near the town of Gotse Delchev.
Dolen is located 26 km away from the town and has its intriguing history. The village was created shortly after Bulgaria came under Ottoman reign. Running away from the Ottoman oppression, some families resettled to the region because of the inaccessibility of the mountain.
Gradually the village expanded and prospered. Today it is relatively small but during the revival period locals earned from tobacco production and livestock.
The village is still hardly accessible. A tiny settlement is the only other populated spot in the region. Its isolation has helped the village preserve some revival-time constructions. More than 70 houses have been preserved and renovated. In the middle of the 20th century, the village was given the status of a historic monument.
Make sure you know one thing before traveling to Dolen- time has stopped there and the village still appears to exist in the distance past. Most of the roads are in poor condition and the houses are covered with typical old-time slates.
The older part of the village has been constructed more than 350 years ago. It is a must-see for all visitors. Another place worth a visit is the church St. Nikolai, well-known for its history and decorations
Dolen’s houses offer accommodation in an attempt to develop rural tourism. No modern-time facilities are available. Visitors can enjoy peace and quite in the village, far away from commercial spots and surrounded by beautiful nature.
