St. Bogoroditsa of Vitosha monastery is located very close to Sofia. It is situated only three km south of Dragalevtsi residential district, among the hills of Vitosha Mountain.
A car ride to the monastery from the center of the city will take you only half an hour but be cautious since signs and road marks are missing. The mountain path from Dragalevtsi to the monastery will lead you to the final destination within half an hour of walking. It is quite easy to get to the cloister and you will be surprised by the peace and calmness you will find there.
The monastery was founded in 1345 and survived the Ottoman invasion. The church was renovated once and during the 17th century, some more decorations were added.
During the Ottoman period, the cloister was an important spiritual and cultural center with its monastery school. One of the abbots – Genadii, was a close friend of Bulgarian revolutionary Vassil Levski, who often used the monastery as a shelter.
The monastery is still active as a nunnery. It fails offering accommodation options. The many hotels in Dragalevtsi deal with the issue. You can continue your mountain walk from the monastery to Aleko hut or Cherni Vruh peak. For a change, you could trace Vassil Levski’s path from Dragalevtsi to the monastery meadow and then head to the Aleko waterfalls.
