St. Archangel Mihail monastery is also known as Dryanovski. It had a long and often sad history. The monastery is situated on the road from Dryanovo to Gabrovo within the limestone gorge of Dryanovska River.
The brothers Assen and Petur probably founded the monastery during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The cloister was an important cultural and Christian center during the dark ages of the Ottoman period. It was devastated and rebuilt at different locations several times to ensure protection. The present day looks of the monastery were shaped in the 17th and the 19th centuries.
During the struggle for national liberation in the 19th century Dryanovski Monastery was one of the most important spots in Bulgaria giving shelter to famous Bulgarian revolutionaries Vassil Levski and Georgi Izmirliev. After the liberation, a monument and a museum were built in the complex as well as a new bell-tower.
If you decide to visit the monastery, have in mind that accommodation is not offered there. Several good restaurants are open there. If you are willing to combine sightseeing with a pleasant walk, do not miss the Bacho Kiro cave, located close to the monastery. Bacho Kiro happens to be the first cave provided with visitor facilities. Evidence shows that primitive humans lived there. Few other caves can be visited in the same region. You will need a guide and proper equipment.
A number of eco paths and tourism routes start close to the monastery.
