One heavenly place on the territory of Bulgaria. Once you hear stories about this mountain region, you will certainly want to visit it. The heart of Stara Planina Mountain splits northern and southern Bulgaria. Elenski Balkan, part of Stara Planina, goes up in high, rebellious peaks and suddenly descends to hide in its folds small mountain settlements, among which the town of Elena.
During the spring, the slopes disappear below white and pink flowers. In the summer, intense sunlight illuminates the ancient forests. The autumn brings its orange and reddish colors and the winter turns Elenski Balkan into a quiet, peaceful and white region that attracts skiers and tourists.
The beauty of nature has affected the people living in the area. A number of famous Bulgarians and revolutionaries were born in Elenski Balkan. The town of Elena has its museums and traditional houses that complement the contemporary looks of the town.
People here are always smiling. They are used to working ceaselessly and helping each other. Once you get in touch with these people, you will be impressed by their practicality, imagination and consideration. Probably the harsh mountain conditions taught these people to deal with all situations.
Elena houses have unmistakable, authentic looks. The gardens abound with flowers. The white house walls hide among green branches and invite visitors to stop and have some rest there.
Interior design in the Elena region is something worth seeing. Wood carvings cover the ceilings. Windows have been designed in a way as to collect the maximal amount of sunlight. Each house has its fireplace. Rooms were built so that the light from one could reach the other. In this manner house owners saved light.
The co-existence between humans and nature in this region has reached perfection. People protect and love nature which provides them with fruit, mushrooms, priceless herbs and green meadows.
Some of Bulgaria’s tastiest yoghurt, cheese and yellow cheese are prepared in the Elenski Balkan region. Mushroom dishes, grilled lamb, pumpkin with milk, fried cheese and other delicacies are available only in this area. A leg of pork, prepared Elena-style can satisfy the taste of even the pickiest tourist.
