Emine Cape is one of the most charming places in Bulgaria’s coastal region. This windy and wild cliff is situated 54 km north of Bourgas and about 14 km south of the small Black Sea town of Obzor.
The cape is the easternmost part of Stara Planina Mountain. Thus, Emine is often used as the divisive mark between the southern and the northern coastline.
Emine cape is actually a 60-m high vertical cliff surrounded by numerous underwater rocks. These are scattered nearly 250 m from the shore, inside the sea.
A lighthouse still functions at the cape. It was opened on December 15 1880.
Emine is one of the stormiest regions in the country. It was named a nature landmark in 1976.
Numerous legends have been told about the cape and its lighthouse. According to one, an old sailor and his daughter lived in the lighthouse. She was more beautiful than the sunrise that burned the sea each morning. The girl grew up free and untamed. Once, while walking near the shore, the girl found a castaway.
She saved his life and fell in the love with that man. Upon leaving the cape, the sailor promised to return to the woman who loved him. Yet, he never came back. The beautiful girl fell sick, sitting at the edge of the cliff each day and waiting for her love to return. Desperate that she had been left alone, the girl jumped off the cliff. Since that day, when the sun rises over the sea, the water near the cape colors in dark purple to remind everyone of the passionate love.
The cape’s name is the subject of other legends. According to some, Greeks used to call the cape ‘windy place.’ Others believe that the cape was named after Mohammed’s mother – Aminah. The most popular belief is that the cape still carries Stara Planina’s old name – Emon.
Emona village is situated about two km away from the cape. Legends connect Emona to the Trojan War.
Irakli protected area is also situated nearby and is one of the Bulgarian coastal places worth examining.
