Being in nature surroundings takes you closer to God. Or so people say. This very same reason determines the spots that will offer you a true spiritual experience. Some unique monasteries are situated in secluded mountain regions, far away from noise and commerce. One such place is St. Troitsa monastery, also known as Etropolski monastery.
The cloister is situated five km away from the town of Etropole, hidden in the folds of Stara Planina Mountain. If you want to run away from noise, this is your place.
Etropolski monastery has a third name, Varovitets. This name is probably derived from the limestone formations found in the area.
A steep path leads from the monastery to a waterfall. The water has been washing the stone wall behind it for thousands of years. During the summer, the waterfall dwindles giving you the chance to explore these rocks.
Accommodation is offered in the monastery. Make use of the option if you want a longer vacation.
The history of the cloister is long. It was a very important center of Christianity and culture during the Ottoman reign. It gave shelter to many revolutionaries, among which Vassil Levski. A secret underground passage was used as escape option in case of emergency.
