One of the most romantic mountain villages in Bulgaria is situated 40 km away from Sofia and eight km away from Svoge, in the picturesque Iskur gorge.
Gara Bov village has its mysticism and numerous legends told about it. According to writings, the village’s founder is the French knight Sen de Beoph. He was captured alongside Baldwin V Count of Flanders. He was banished in the village of Kostel and later on received permission to settle in the vicinities of the present-day village together with 1000 knights.
The village has more to offer besides its interesting history. In 1918, Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov lived and worked there. He settled in Dangova house (currently known as Vazov’s house). An eco path starts from the house. It passes through the valley of Treskavets river, reaches Skaklia River and moves on to the village of Zasele.
The eco path is readily accessible and completing the walk takes an hour and a half. Benches, information boards and lights have been placed to help tourists.
One of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria, Skaklia, is situated near Gara Bov. The water drops from a height of 130 m. Skaklia is the fourth biggest waterfall in Bulgaria and has been named a culture landmark. During the winter, the waterfall freezes and turns into one of Bulgaria’s most popular ice climbing destinations.
If you decide to enjoy the beautiful and breath-taking landmarks of the Iskur gorge, you might spend more time in the area. Various villas and guest houses function in the vicinities of Gara Bov and offer comfort and tranquility amidst the magnificent nature.
