Gornoezerovski monastery, known officially as Sveta Bogoroditsa Monastery is situated only few km away from Bourgas between the districts of Gorno Ezerovo and Meden Roudnik. A narrow road between the two districts winds through the valley and leads to the white monastery walls that seem to stand high in the middle of nowhere.
According to legends, the place housed a pagan sanctuary during Thracian times. Once Bulgarians accepted Christianity, they constructed a church. Over the years, it fell apart and the current-day church appeared. The monastery was probably founded in the 12th century. Springs flowing in the area provided healing for various diseases.
The first documents that mention the monastery date back to 1892. In municipal registers, it has been mentioned as Aiazmoto. From the Bulgarian liberation to 1944, the monastery saw numerous visits from Bourgas residents. People continued visiting the monastery, though secretly, during the communist rule.
In 1982, a group of believers started renewing the monastery. Mother Serafima has been taking care of the sanctuary from that year until present times.
Currently St. Bogoroditsa has two churches. St. Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno is unique because of its shape. The complex features residential premises, a monastery kitchen and agriculture facilities.
The most interesting asset of the complex is its 40 chapels. Each one carries the name of a saint and some of them have been constructed over healing springs.
Each of the seven healing springs has unique composition and the water is useful in the healing of various diseases. The springs have been flowing since ancient times.
Mother Serafima continues taking care of the complex and helping in the construction of new chapels.
Many Bourgas residents like organizing picnic near the monastery, where peaceful ambience is guaranteed.
