Bulgaria’s highest mountain is called Rila. It is part of the Rila-Rhodope mountain range. The range acts as a water division line on the Balkan Peninsula. Rila also happens to be part of the line dividing climate zones on the peninsula. Rila has some of Bulgaria’s highest peaks, among which the Balkan leader called Mousala. The Seven Rila Lakes are yet another nature wonder situated on the territory of Rila. A number of other, smaller rivers and lakes can also be seen on the territory of the mountain. The availability of so much water actually produced the mountain’s name. Rila comes from Thracian and means Water Mountain.
