Ivanovski rock monastery is one of the Bulgarian landmarks included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is located 12 km south of the town of Rousse and four km away from the village of Ivanovo. The road leading to it is in good condition and signs will direct you to the monastery.
At a height of 32 m, in the rocks above the ground, monks from the 13th century found a place suitable for their purposes. All churches, chapels and living premises have been carved in the rocks. Only few have been preserved till present day. Yet, the monastery used to be an intricate network of nearly 40 churches and 300 living premises.
The Dobroudzha region has several other monasteries carved inside rocks. Ivanovski monastery differentiates itself through the unbelievable frescoes. Only few remained intact because time and treasure hunters managed to damage the rest.
Five of the monastery's churches still have wall paintings. The richness of color is combined with the typical for the period return to ancient patterns.
St. Bogoroditsa is the main church. The church Gospodev Dol carriers the name of the region where it is situated. The biggest landmark carriers the simple name Tsurkvata (the church). According to beliefs, it was founded by tsar Ivan Alexander.
Many of the monk premises keep carved in the walls the confessions of their inhabitants.
The region offers no accommodation opportunities. Visitors can stay in Rousse. Transportation from the town to the monastery is rather easy.
