Kabile appeared around an ancient Thracian sanctuary. According to historians, a settlement appeared there for the first time in the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 1st centuries BC. Alexander the Great’s conquest led to reconstruction and the settlement started resembling Greek cities with the typical acropolis, square, temples and fortress walls.
Romans conquered the region in the year 72 BC. Kabile became one of the most important transport, military and economy centers of Thrace province. Archaeologists discovered Roman buildings that impress with their size and craftsmanship. A basilica and a church dating back to the 4th century AD are two of the most interesting constructions discovered in the area.
Fragments of the mosaic basilica floor have been preserved.
A conquest in 583 completely destroyed the settlement and it ceased existing. In the 10th to 14th centuries a new settlement appeared in the region.
Kabile and its surroundings were named archaeological preserve in 1965. The territory is also a protected area and a monument of culture of national importance. An archaeology museum functions on the spot, where all of the findings are displayed.
The museum welcomes visitors each work day from 8 am to midday and from 1 pm to 5 pm.
