Kabile Monastery or Rozhdestvo na Bogoroditsa is situated six km away from Iambol in the region of Kabile archaeology preserve. A wide, empty valley will catch your eye shortly before reaching Kabile. The monastery is located right there.
The monastery has ancient history. Legends tell that in the fourth and fifth centuries a monastery existed there and was well known for a healing spring flowing there.
Kabile Monastery became a convent and acted as such until the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century. Ottoman soldiers came to the region in search of a treasure. They failed finding any and in their rage destroyed the monastery.
For many years people forgot about the monastery. Yet, legends of the healing spring were still told.
In 1898, a man from a nearby village had a dream in which a woman showed him the healing spring. The man started digging and discovered it. Quarrels with his neighbors over the valuable finding made the man cover the spring, which was once again forgotten.
A woman from Sliven had the same dream in 1918. She discovered the spring and together with people from a nearby village started the construction of a small chapel. A monastery complex appeared over time.
Construction of the present-time monastery started in 1919 and continued until 1944. Several nuns are taking care of the monastery today.
Kabile Monastery enchants visitors with its beautiful gardens and alleys and the hospitality of the nuns. They take care of the monastery and keep spirituality alive.
The monastery has a hotel part and offers accommodation. The meals that nuns prepare are among the tastiest you will ever try.
You can easily reach the monastery following an asphalt road from Yambol.
