A strange natural phenomenon carrying the name Kamenni Gubi (rock mushrooms) can be seen on the road between Kurdzhali and Haskovo, one km away from the village of Beli Plast. Reaching the area, an amazing view will appear before your eyes. Giant rocks, looking like mushrooms look as if they have ‘grown’ in a large field.
Each rock phenomenon is nearly two m high. The ‘stem’ is shaded in pink because of a specific mineral. Another mineral gives the mushroom slightly green nuance. Black and grey spots can be noticed because of some other rock components.
The mushrooms formed long time ago, during the Paleogenic era. Underwater volcanic activity led to their appearance. Once water withdrew, rain, sun and wind gave the rocks their final shape.
The area was named a nature landmark in 1947.
Other interesting landmarks in the region include archaeological complex Perperikon and Kurszhali’s history museum.
