The little town of Kiten is located 55 km south of Bourgas. It is found between the towns of Primorsko and Tsarevo.
Kiten’s older part is set on the small peninsula of Ourdoviza, separated from the mainland by a narrow strip of land.
Ancient finds signify that the town has rich history. Remains of clay dishes take archaeologists back to Thracian times.
The contemporary settlement was found in 1932 by immigrants from eastern Thrace. These people constructed houses specifically. From distance the houses resemble a bouquet of flowers, which gave the town its name- Kiten.
Some remains of the ancient fortress Ourdoviza are located near Kiten.
Legends have been told about the place, just like about many other Bulgarian settlements. According to the story, a local girl promised to marry the Ottoman ruler at the time. She had one condition. The sultan had to free from taxation the people living in the area that she managed to cross on horseback from morning to sunset.
The girl rode all day, trying to include in the area more places. In the end of the day, she reached a bay north of the peninsula, where the girl and her horse died from exhaustion. Yet the sultan kept his promise. The bay, where the girl died was given the name Atliman- the horse’s bay.
Kiten is well-known for its two beaches. The northern beach carries the name Atliman and the southern is called Karaach. Ourdoviza, Kiten’s peninsula protrudes in the sea between the two beaches.
Six camping sites are located to the south of Kiten. These are Kiten, Yug, Koral, Nestinarka, Oasis and Arapia.
The climate is mild and temperature during the winter rarely goes below two degrees Celsius. Sunny days during the summer are numerous. The forest located nearby brings cool wind and moderates the summer heat.
Typical accommodation for the town can be found in small hotels. The restaurants are also tiny but well-known for the good cuisine. The proximity of nearby popular resorts attracts younger people to Kiten.
