Kotel’s natural science museum features one of the most diversified collections in the country. Its exhibition area of 1000 sq m holds nearly 30 000 items, presenting the biodiversity of eastern Stara Planina Mountain.
A teacher founded the museum. He collected items over several decades. In the 50s of the 20th century, his collection was used for the setting up of a museum under the guidance of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Items have been separated in several collections. Some of them include fossils, plants, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Fossils exceed 100 types. Over 200 plant and insect species can be examined, as well.
The museum welcomes visitors each week day from 9 am to 5 pm. Call in advance, if you plan to visit on a Saturday or a Sunday.
