The oldest architectural monument in Karlovo was constructed in 1485. Even today you can see the beautiful façade of Kourshoum mosque.
You will have difficulties discovering information about the landmark and its history. When visiting Karlovo, you will find the mosque in relatively poor state. Vandals have managed scribbling writings on the walls and the information plate has been damaged.
Despite the harm it has suffered, the mosque still impresses with its dimensions.
The local Ottoman ruler used materials from the destroyed St. Spas Monastery in the construction of the mosque. Evidence of this fact is still available today since the marble columns of the mosque carry Christian symbols. In 1946, the ruler devised the entire settlement surrounding the mosque for its maintenance.
Kourshoum mosque acted as a separation line between the Bulgarian and the Ottoman districts. Bulgarians were forced to move south of the mosque and to settle there in Shahun district.
The mosque has been named Kourshoum (bullet) because of its lead roof. Today, it has the status of a monument of culture.
A small and beautiful park surrounds the mosque. There, you can enjoy the charm and peacefulness of the mountain town.
