Kresna gorge is a favorite spot of extreme sports lovers. There, they can get the needed adrenaline rush and practice the preferred extreme activity. Those in favor of peaceful living can explore nature and the unusual for the Bulgarian climate animal and plant species.
The gorge is situated in Blagoevgrad region, following the international road to Greece and shortly before Petrich. Kresna gorge that formed following Strouma River’s way through Pirin and Malashevska mountains is 18 km long.
Two climate zones meet in the area and predetermine the unusual flora and fauna. Kresna gorge features plants and animals that are typical for continental and Mediterranean zones. The region is home of many birds, tortoises, reptiles, amphibians, bats, fish and insects. Some of the species have been included in Bulgaria’s Red Book of endangered plants and animals.
Tisata preserve is situated inside the gorge’s area. The preserve features the biggest concentration of juniper on the Balkans. It is also the habitat of more than hundred types of birds.
Steep cliffs enable clubs to practice rafting, canyoning, horseback riding. In the beginning of April, extreme sports clubs organize rafting demonstrations. Everyone willing to try this activity can benefit from the services of instructors.
Yet, Kresna gorge might be put to threat by a highway project. The road is to connect Sofia to Koulata border checkpoint. Construction is set to begin in 2012. Environment and Water Affairs Ministry said that it will do its best to protect the rare animal and plant species in the region.
If you have not visited Kresna gorge yet, you have the winter to get ready. And yet, if you never enjoyed extreme sports and water, the wonderful nature will provide you with a complete relaxation activity.
