Bulgaria has over 300 waterfalls. One of the most picturesque and impressive cascades in the country is situated near the village of Kroushouna, Letnitsa municipality.
The village of Kroushouna is situated in the western part of Stara Planina Mountain, 190 km away from Sofia, 50 km away from Pleven and 30 km away from Lovech. The area is mostly known for its nature landmarks. To reach the waterfalls, you need to turn left at the village center. A small path will take you to the cascades.
Kroushouna waterfalls are located in Maarata area. The place is also known for its other landmarks among which caves and numerous small waterfalls.
The major cascade springs from Kroushounska cave that has various beautiful formations. The cascade is made of system of small lakes and barriers that separate them from each other. It has been recognized as the highest cascade system in Bulgaria.
The main cascade flows down a height of 20 m and then separates. Thick moss covers the nearby rocks, all of which shaped by the water. The area is lush, green and cool and is the perfect place for a summertime getaway.
Kroushouna’s waterfalls were named a protected nature landmark in 1995. Before the construction of an eco path in the area, the landmark was inaccessible.
The eco path is a system of bridges and stairs that will help you explore the entire region. The walk from the village to the cascade lasts three hours and a half. It is possible to hire a mountain guide.
Each bridge will take you to a new and unexplored before part of the cascade. The river will remain under your feet, a slightly extreme experience.
The stairs will take you to the very entrance of the cave. Though the eco path is among the shortest in the country, it uncovers one of Bulgaria’s most picturesque areas.
Boninska cave is another landmark in Maarata region. It houses the longest underground lake in Bulgaria.
Vranitsa abyss is situated four km away from Kroushouna. To reach it, take the road to the village of Kurpanchevo. Stairs will take you to the bottom of the abyss.
Several guest houses offer accommodation in the village of Kroushouna, in case you decide to dedicate more time to the area. Kroushouna’s mehanas and restaurants will allow you taste local specialties and delicious deserts.
