If you have taken a trip to Lovech but would also like to explore the vicinities of the town, you might decide to head to one of Bulgaria’s most historically important places.
Kukrina Inn is situated 17 km away from Lovech and you will need about 20 minutes to reach it by car. The inn is in the very center of the village of Kukrina. A number of information boards will help you in discovering this place.
Most Bulgarians know and will gladly tell you the story of Kukrina inn and one of Bulgaria’s most prominent revolutionaries – Vasil Levski. The inn was the place where Ottoman soldiers captured Levski on a cold December morning in 1872.
During Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, Kukrina Inn acted as a meeting place for revolutionaries from the region. Revolutionary Hristo Tsonev rented the inn specifically for that purpose. Levski arrived in Kukrina to meet local strugglers for freedom. He spent the night there and was captured the next morning.
After Levski’s capture the inn was abandoned. It was completely destroyed during a fire in the 19th century.
In 1924, an initiative committee decided to restore the inn. Since 1931, Kukrina Inn acts as a museum and is listed among the 100 national tourist sites.
You can examine the inn and its interior, both restored in the way that it looked long time ago.
A monument was erected next to the inn, to honor Levski’s accomplishments.
