Magourata cave is situated 180 km away from Sofia, near Belogradchik. The cave halls discovered so far have a total length of 2500 m.
The main hall is surrounded by several smaller ones. Magourata, as well as the surrounding region, have been named a nature landmark.
More than 700 drawings were discovered on the cave walls. According to scientists, this is one of the biggest cave painting collections in Europe. The drawings appeared over a long period of time. Similar ones were discovered in Italy and Asia. Some of the drawings resemble a calendar and signify that the cave might have been used as a sanctuary.
