Maliovitsa is a small mountain resort, situated below the peak under the same name. It is located 13 km away from the village of Govedartsi and 27 km away from the town of Samokov.

Maliovitsa is one on the highest peaks in Bulgaria, measuring 2729 m. This part of Rila has several other high peaks, which makes the region attractive for climbers and hikers.

Alpinists prefer Maliovitsa. Some of the most difficult climbing routes are situated there.

Maliovitsa hut and the resort are the starting point of many routes. From the resort, you could reach Ivan Vazov and Ribni Ezera huts, Rila Мonastery and the Seven Rila Lakes.

The resort has several ski tracks. Since the resort is not so popular, accommodation prices remain modest.

Govedartsi also has a ski track. If you want to diversify the vacation, stay in Govedartsi or Maliovitsa and switch the ski tracks. The resort of Borovets is also situated nearby. Since prices in Borovets are rather high, it would be best to visit the resort and go back to Maliovitsa and Govedartsi for the night.

During the summer, many mountain lovers meet in Maliovitsa. Hiking and biking routes start there.

The proximity of Maliovitsa to Sofia is a great benefit for the resort. You can take a day-long trip to the resort and return to Sofia for the night.

Some well-known resorts are also situated in Rila. Among them is Bulgaria’s oldest such resort- Borovets, previously known as Chamkoria. Sofia aristocrats from the first half of the 20th century preferred Chamkoria both for their summer and winter rest. Old, aristocracy villas can still be seen in the resort. The descendants of these aristocrats use the property for rest nowadays.

Bulgaria’s royal family also had its residence in Borovets. Tsarska Bistritsa is still there today.

The town of Samokov, birthplace of one of Bulgaria’s most famous icon painting and art schools is also in this mountain region. Govedarsti, a small village in the mountain, has also gained popularity as a vacation spot. The resort of Maliovitsa, located underneath the peak under the same name, attracts tourists as well.

When talking about Rila, the first thing that comes to mind is the Rila monastery.

The northwestern part of the mountain houses the small resort of Panichishte. The tiny place is bound to turn into a major winter resort, since experts assess the slopes as ideal for the positioning of ski tracks and winter sports facilities.

If you want to explore Rila closely, have in mind that the majority of hiking and alpine sports lovers prefer this mountain. The hiking routes start from several points, among which Maliovitsa and the resort of Borovets.

An experienced guide can take you in several hours to Mousala peak, the Seven Rila Lakes or the Rila monastery. Rila has a big number of mountain cabins and shelters that offer rest.

During the winter, the mountain can turn into a dangerous place. Some of the higher slopes, often witness avalanches, which on occasions cause the death of climbers and tourists. close
