One of the small mountain villages in Bulgaria that have remained unchanged throughout time is called Medven. The village is situated 40 km away from Sliven, 15 km away from Zheravna and 12 km away from Kotel.
The village’s population is no more than 260 people but it welcomes many visitors during the summer months. Medven is well known for its revival-period houses and the memorial house of revolutionary Zahari Stoianov.
Some of the old Medven houses today host small hotels where guests can enjoy accommodation in authentic village settings. The village mehanas offer numerous traditional dishes. If you prefer more luxurious accommodation, several options are available.
Nature landmarks in the vicinities of Medven abound. Some of the must-sees include Goliam Skok, Maluk Skok and Sinia Vir waterfalls. Several caves are situated in the region. Caves have not been made suitable for visits so if you want to explore them, it would be best to hire a local guide.
In the recent past, Medven started developing hunting traditions. The nearby village of Sadovo features a hunting reserve, where you can hire a professional guide and obtain more information.
Medvenska River offers suitable conditions for fishing. Fishing is also possible in the nearby Kamchia preserve. Other nature-related activities include herb and mushroom collection during the summer months.
The village and the nearby region feature cultural landmarks as well. Near the village, you can explore the remains of a Roman fortress. Zheravna architecture preserve is only a short distance away. Kotel and Ichera are two other interesting places situated nearby.
