Mousala’s name is connected to the Ottoman presence. The word means way to god or god’s mountain. According to both translations, the place has been revered for centuries.
Borovets, one of Bulgaria’s most popular winter resorts is located on the slopes below Mousala. A number of routes to the peak start there.
From Borovets, you can take the lift, which will elevate you in 20 to 25 minutes to Yastrebets region. A restaurant in the area offers good food and majestic mountain view. Reaching Mousala cabin from Yastrebets takes 45 to 60 minutes. The walk is rather easy, since the inclination of the road remains moderate.
Mousala cabin is the oldest one in Bulgaria, a fact that is easily noticed. The walls appear to be slanted in unusual ways. The cabin offers food and refreshments, though prices are high.
A path takes you from the cabin to the peak. The walk lasts from two to three hours. Temperatures drop as you get higher, so make sure you have warm clothes in your bag. Getting closer to the peak, you will also feel the sun rays more intensely, so have in mind you might need sunscreen.
The peak houses a meteorological station, one other place that will give you the chance to recover from the walk with a cup of tea or coffee in hand.
Going down is much easier than climbing up. Upon the arrival to Mousala peak, you can choose either one of two descend methods. Option A features using the lift, option B involves walking. The walk down lasts three to four hours. The path goes down alongside Bistritsa River and crosses the water at one point.
