One of the most beautiful caves in Bulgaria is situated in the Rhodope Mountain region and carries the name Ouhlovitsa. The cave is located in the Smolyan area, only a few km away from the village of Mogilitsa.
The cave was discovered in 1967. Its name comes from the Bulgarian word ouloulitsa, meaning a type of predatory bird. Probably such birds inhabited the area and gave the cave its name.
Ouhlovitsa is situated at an altitude of 1040 m. To reach the cave, you need to walk at least half an hour up a steep path. The cave itself is 460 m long but visitors can explore only 330 m of them.
Beautiful formations give the cave its popularity. It also features seven cave lakes and water cascades. Throughout the year, temperature inside the cave is stable and near 10 to 11 degrees Celsius. The second cave floor features the so called hall of abysses. Four abysses go down from this area to the first cave floor. A metal staircase connects the two levels.
The parking lot on the road beneath the cave features a restaurant and resting places. Mogilitsa is also situated nearby and is well known for the so called Agoushevi Konatsi (Ottoman administrative building).
