Mousala is the tallest peak in Bulgaria, as well as on the Balkans. The tallest peak of Rila Mountain brags the impressive 2925 m of height.
The Greek Olympus peak is only a few meters shorter. According to a joke, Greeks could not take it and one night secretly piled stones on the peak but it never became as tall as Mousala.
Mousala is a word of Ottoman origin and signifies Way to God or Mountain of God. Both translations signify that the place was seen as one of spiritual importance.
