One of the most outstanding buildings in Sofia is the church St. Nikolai Choudotvorets (the miracle maker). It is more commonly known as the Russian church. The church is situated on the crossing of Rakovski Street and Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard.
Russian emigrants provided funds for the construction of the church. Work lasted nine years and ended in 1913.
M. Preobrazhenski, well-known at the time, worked on the church’s architecture. The style resembles Moscow churches from the 17th century. Russian artists worked on the wall paintings. The same painters created the drawings in Alexander Nevski cathedral and the church of St. Nedelya.
St. Nikolai’s iconostasis is one of a kind in Bulgaria.
In 1994, the church underwent renovation. Since recently, it offers Sunday classes. Children go there to draw, sing and create small souvenirs sold for charity
