The first newly opened art gallery over the past 15 years is situated in the town of Sevlievo. The gallery is named after world-famous brother Peikovi, who grew up in the town but became artists in Italy.
The building in which the masterpieces are housed has interesting history. It was constructed in 1878. An Austrian architect made the project for Sevlievo merchant Ilia Denchev. Upon Denchev’s death, the building was used by the town court. The building incurred major damage during an earthquake in 1977. Renovation took place in 1985 and reconstruction continued over a period of 20 years.
Sevlievo’s art gallery has overall area of 840 sq m. The ground floor exhibits sculptures of famous artists.
The first floor hosts a collection including the works of Peikovi brothers. Works of famous painters, among which Svetlin Rousev, Encho Pironkov and Nikolai Rouschoukliev, can be examined there.
One of the curious items exhibited in the gallery is a marble chess set positioned in the central part of the building. It was made in 1947. The board measures 120 by 120 cm and is made of three types of marble. The chess pieces themselves are made of bronze.
Visiting exhibitions are usually displayed on the third floor. The fourth floor hosts literature summits and theater plays.
The Sevlievo art gallery is situated at 62 Stefan Peshev street and welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. On Saturdays, the gallery functions from 9 am to 1 pm.
