Shoumen Plateau nature park was named a protected territory in 1980. The park is located right next to the town of Shoumen.
Apart from the fact that it protects numerous animal and plant species, the park is known as a historic site where various landmarks are located.
Shoumen fortress, probably one of the most important landmarks of the region, is situated on one of the park hills. The fortress remains can be seen in Hisarluka region. The complex is made of residential buildings, sanctuaries and the fortification. Archaeologists have partially restored the complex, turning it into one of the favorite tourist places in the region.
If you are exploring both the Shoumen Plateau and Shoumen, head to Kioshkovete park. The region begins in the western districts of the town.
Shoumen Plateau is known for the large number of caves there, most of which explored. Over 60 caves have been mapped. Findings make scientists believe that these caves were inhabited in the distant past.
Later on, some of the caves acted as monk cells and small monasteries. Remains of such can be seen near the village of Osmar in Osmarski Boaz cave.
Shoumen Plateau houses two of the biggest caves in Bulgaria named Zandana and Tainite Ponori. Tainite Ponori is the deepest cave in Northeastern Bulgaria with its depth of 101 m.
Zandana, also known as Pearl Cave, is probably the most beautiful Shoumen Plateau cave. It has two levels that are connected to each other.
Creators of the Bulgarian state monument is situated in the southeastern part of the park. The monument was created to mark 1300 years since the establishment of the Bulgarian state. It is a massive sculptures that includes two halls.
Boukaka preserve is also situated inside the park.
The proximity of the park to Shoumen turns it into a really popular tourism spot. It is accessible because of the developed system of roads and alleys. Shelters and fountains were also set up. Four tourism routes provide access to all parts of Shoumen Plateau. Visitors can also practice rock climbing, mountain biking, as well as delta and paragliding.
