Sliven is one of the towns that contributed significantly to the cultural and historic development of Bulgaria. It is situated in the central part of the country and its name probably comes from the merger (slivane) of three local rivers and the well-known Sliven winds.
The town dates back to ancient times. It developed through the centuries as a rich craftsmen and culture center. In the beginning of the 19th century, during the Russo-Turkish war, Sliven was liberated for a short period of time. When Russian soldiers left the town in 1828, nearly half of the Sliven residents relocated as well.
Sliven is known for many developments but undoubtedly the most important one was the opening of a manufacture line in the 30s of the 19th century. Dobri Zheliazkov opened the first textile factory in the Ottoman empire and soon started supplying the sultan with clothing.
During the Ottoman reign over Bulgaria, many Bulgarian revolutionaries acted there and Sliven became known as the town of the 100 revolutionary leaders.
Many landmarks in Sliven must be seen. Hadzhi Dimitur’s house, the house-museum of Dobri Chintoulov and the Sliven lifestyle museum from the 19th century should be visited.
The region also features archaeological monuments. Sliven’s history museum has more than 80 000 exhibition items. Objects from a recently discovered Thracian tomb were placed there.
It is worth paying a visit to the textile industry museum. The museum has been set up in the first factory building.
Hadzhi Dimitur’s monument, the clock tower and the art academy are other interesting Sliven landmarks.
Dobri Chintoulov choir is among the most famous in Bulgaria. It has won many international awards.
Take a walk on the main marble street. If you want to fully experience the town’s ambience go to Karandila park. The well-known blue rocks can be seen there. They change their color depending on the way that light hits them.
Sliven’s mineral baths are situated close to the town. North of the town is situated the village of Ichera. Zheravna, one of the most beautiful Bulgarian villages is also situated nearby.
