Sofia’s zoo is the biggest in the country. A number of exotic bird and animal species can be seen.
Prince Ferdinand gave the idea for the zoo’s creation in 1888. He was known for his interest in natural science. Several animals were initially kept in the yard of the royal residence. Once the collection increased by two bears, the place became unsuitable.
The prince moved the animal park to the former botanical garden of the palace. It was situated outside Sofia at the time, in the area that is today located between Sofia University and Gourko street.
Ferdinand appointed the palace hunter as zoo manager. The new manager worked nearly 40 years to expand the park.
Over the coming years, the number of animals grew. Managers were unsatisfied with the presence of local species only. Soon, the zoo got exotic birds and animals.
The location of the park remained unchanged until the 80s of the 20th century. It was then relocated to Sreburna street. Today, the zoo is much bigger and offers wonderful leisure time opportunities. Apart from the walking alleys, the zoo has several cafés that offer drinks and snacks.
Recently, the zoo has been experiencing financial problems and had to introduce adoption options. Many animals already benefit from the care of private sponsors. Adopters provide funds for the needed food and improvement of the animal’s surroundings.
The zoo is located on 1 Sreburna street and works each day from 9 am to 7 pm in the summer and from 9 am to 5 pm in the winter. Tickets cost one lev and discounts are available for students.
