Basarbovski monastery is situated in the picturesque Roussenski Lom valley. It is located 10 km away from the town of Rousse and carries the name of a nearby village.
Evidence of the monastery’s existence can be found in 15th century Ottoman chronicles.
During the Ottoman presence, the monastery lost its inhabitants. A monk settled there and started restoring the monastery in 1937. A flood took place in 1940, destroying some of the sanctuary’s property.
Donations helped monks add new living premises to the complex. Work was finalized on August 30 1940.
The most famous resident of the monastery was St. Dimitrii Basarbovski. He was a simple man and led ascetic life. The saint lived in the mountain and died there. Many miracles occurred after his death and according to records, the remains of Dimtrii Basrabovski provided cure to many.
St. Dimtrii Basrabovski’s remains were taken to Bucharest during the Russo-Turkish war. They are still there today.
The monastery has been preserved till present day. A green alley takes believers to the inner yard and the well that the saint dug. Two rooms and a cave are situated in the lower part of the rocks. Believers need to climb 48 steps to reach the place where Dimitrii Basarbovki slept, according to legends. The church is also situated there and an icon of the saint can be seen inside.
For nearly eight centuries, believers have been visiting the monastery high above in the rocks.
