St. Teodor Stratilat Monastery is situated 1.5 km away from the village of Balsha. The Sofia region village is close to the capital and suitable for weekend walks away from Sofia.
An unpaved road leads to the monastery, diverting north from the Dobroslavtsi – Balsha road. The monastery itself is visible from a distance.
According to some legends, St. Teodor Stratilat dates back to the 12th century, while historians believe it was created in the 14th century or later. Remains of old walls have been discovered in the region but excavation works have not taken place yet.
In the end of the 19th century, only ruins from the monastery church remained. Walls were set up and nuns settled there. The monastery was once again abandoned in the middle of the 20th century. Renovation took place again in the 70s.
The monastery saw its peak in modern times. Full renovation started in 1996 and ended in 2003.
Today, the church and the monastery look very different from what they used to be in medieval times. The living premises are suitable for 20 people and the monastery offers accommodation to tourists.
