If you decide to visit the Bulgarian town of ‘straight streets’ and are interested in history, you will probably enjoy exploring the Stara Zagora history museum.
The museum’s history started back in 1907. Stara Zagora’s archaeology union decided to create a museum protecting artifacts connected to the town’s history. The collection was initially placed in a schoolroom. In 1912, a new building was constructed to house the town library and the history museum. The museum officially opened doors in 1949.
Stara Zagora’s museum preserves over 170 000 exhibition items, 86 000 of which can be explored by visitors. The overall area of the building is 1290 sq m and collections are displayed on four levels.
Upon entering the museum, you will find yourself exploring the second level, where collections named Prehistory and Antiquity can be seen. The collections include Thracian burial jewelry, ancient tools, ceramics and dishes. A marble human figure from the early Neolithic period can be seen as well. Collections of bronze artifacts are also displayed there.
At the first museum level, visitors can explore a fully renovated ancient street, transportation means and fortifications from the distant past.
Medieval Period and Ottoman Period and Revival sections are displayed at the third level. There, you will see jewelry and craftsmen tools. Collections of guns, revolvers and photos from the 15th to the 19th century trace Stara Zagora’s history. A model of a revival-period city is displayed, as well.
The fourth level has total exhibition area of 390 sq m. There, visitors can explore temporary exhibitions or can attend literature readings and other events.
To visit the museum, go to 42 Ruski boulevard each week day from 8.30 to midday and from 12.30 to 5 pm.
