Strelcha is a small town in the heart of Sredna Gora, situated 110 km away from Sofia, 12 km away from the town of Panagyurishte and 24 km away from Koprivshtitsa. The town’s population is 5000 people.
The area was populated in the distant past. A Thracian tribe lived there and left rich heritage of over 300 mounds. Some of them have been explored and welcome visitors today.
In the first century, the region became a Roman province. Bulgarian reign began in the 9th century. The remains of Strelchansko Kale fortress remain as witness of this era. Strelchansko Kale is situated several km away from Strelcha and functioned until the 14th century. A medieval town was situated underneath the fortress. It carried the name Streluch and moved, yet the name has been preserved till present day.
During the revival period, Strelcha acted as a regional culture center. Locals took part in the April Uprising and suffered the consequences of this rebellion. Many residents left the town and returned only after the liberation in 1878.
In 1969, Strelcha turned into a spa resort. Many healing mineral springs flow in the region. Apart from relaxation procedures, the town offers cultural tourism opportunities.
Some of the region’s landmarks include the tomb and the temple of Zhaba Mogila (mound). The artifacts found there have been moved to Strelcha’s history museum.
Strelchansko Kale’s remains are situated on the bank of Strelchenska Louda and Yana rivers. A path leads to the ruins in less than one hour.
Phenomenal rock formations can be seen near Strelcha in the seven areas surrounding the town.
The remains of an ancient Roman fortress can also be seen there. Many temples and sanctuaries preserved from Thracian times surround Strelcha. The town itself has interesting spots to show to tourists. Strelcha demonstrates both revival-time evidence and construction skill.
Several hotels offer good accommodation opportunities and spa procedures. The nearby towns also have interesting landmarks to show. Make sure to visit Panagyurishte, Koprivshtitsa and Starosel.
