Sueva Doupka cave is situated in Ledenik area, near Iablanitsa and three km away from the village of Brestnitsa.
The name of the area (led in Bulgarian means ice) comes from two abysses that are always filled with ice.
The cave is nearly three million years old. It is situated at an altitude of 500 m and its length is 250 m.
Temperature is constant between seven and 12 degrees Celsius. The first two chambers are coldest.
According to a legend, the name of the cave comes from the names of the twins Suiu and Seiu who chased by Ottomans hid in the cave. Sueva Doupka was named a nature landmark in 1967.
The cave has five chambers, each one carrying a distinct name. Koupene chamber features some unique cave formation.
Sroutnishte chamber suffered most damage during an 1893 earthquake. The stalactites make various sounds when slightly hit because of the varying sizes. Interesting cave formations known as dendrites can be seen in this hall.
The biggest chamber carries the name Kontsertna (concert hall) because of the acoustics. As the name signifies, various concerts take place there. The movie Detstvo Moe (My Childhood) was filmed in this chamber.
Cosmos is the warmest and tallest chamber. Its height is three meters and the inside temperature is 12 degrees Celsius.
A gigantic stalacton gives the name of the last chamber. Beliat Zamuk (the white castle) features other beautiful formations, one of which resembling a Roman soldier.
