The old part of the coastal town of Nessebar is really tiny. The plot that it covers is only 850 m long and 350 m wide. This piece of land is connected to the main part of Nessebar through a tine strip of land. Part of this 'old town' is rapidly growing, merging Nessebar with the nearby towns and resorts.
Numerous archaeological finds prove that this place is truly old. Over the centuries a third of the old town disappeared in the sea. Remains of the city wall can still be seen today in the water, hundred meters away from the shore.
Many buildings from the revival period have been preserved. They all demonstrate the typical for the time architecture. Old mills and fountains can be seen as well.
Nessebar was named an architecture and archeology preserve in 1956. In 1983, UNESCO added the monuments there in its World Heritage List.
A museum opened doors in 1994 and is located on 2A Mesambria street. It functions each summer day from 9 am to 6 pm. During the winter, the museum is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. More about the town and its history is available here.
